A durable flooring option with many benefits.
Advantages of Cork FlooringCork flooring is becoming popular again, and for good reason. It is environmentally friendly, has lots of benefits, and can be made into about any texture or color you would like. Cork flooring comes from the bark of trees in southern Europe and northern Africa. Portugal is the cork capital of the world. The source is renewable as well, after the cork bark is harvested, the trees renew the bark, and can be harvested again in a couple of years. The trees can last 100 years or more, so it is a self-renewing resource.
The cork is ground up and made into either planks or tiles, and can look like a hardwood floor, or other appearances. Cork is spongy to some degree and soft. This means if you drop a glass or plate, it will most likely bounce and not break. The flooring feels soft underfoot, and is never hot or cold to touch. It also muffles sound. Sometimes home gyms, or even public facilities, use cork floors, but they are also great in kitchens. Cork is non-allergenic, and repels mold and dust, making it friendly and comfortable to inhabitants of a house as well.
Cork has been around for more than 100 years as a flooring material. It used to be used in public areas a lot, and gradually gained acceptance for home use. It reached its peak in popularity in the 1970s, and then faded to some degree. Since about 2000 it has slowly regained popularity and cork flooring is making resurgence in popularity around the country.
Cork flooring does require some maintenance. It will scratch or get dented if you leave dirt stand a long time or allow dust to build up. It is durable for regular use, but it can be damaged. If you scoot a table or couch across the surface, you could cause a serious dent that would be hard to fix, for example. But under normal use it holds up fine. Shoes, or high heels, make dents, but those easily bounce out and are not a problem. Cork flooring can also be damaged by standing water, but small spills are cleaned up easily. Since it is porous, it can be stained, but manufacturers offer sealing that can offer protection. This flooring is gaining in popularity, and if cared for regularly, can give you years of enjoyment with an environmentally friendly and comfortable flooring style.
