Hardwood Flooring

Nothing can beat the natural beauty of hardwood flooring.

Hardwood Flooring

Almost ever since people began living at homes, hardwood has been used as flooring. The material appeals for numerous reasons:

  • Brings in warmth and a touch of nature into your living space.
  • Comes in a variety of styles and colors that are suitable for interiors that range from traditional to cutting-edge contemporary.
  • Easy to clean, requiring only an occasional sweeping or vacuuming and some wiping with a damp mop.
  • Damaged boards can be replaced without affecting the entire floor.
  • Can be re-sanded and refinished into a different style.

There are two main types of hardwood flooring: solid and engineered.

Solid Hardwood Flooring

Solid hardwood floors generally cost more than the engineered variety. Each board of solid hardwood is made out of a single piece of wood that is about three-quarters of an inch thick. The size allows it to be re-sanded and refinished as long as the floor remains useful. Because wood does absorb moisture, it can expand and contract depending on the humidity and temperature. Solid wood floors are not recommended for basements and are confined to spaces on the ground level or higher. Sealing a hardwood floor helps limit liquids and stains, such as from water or wine, from damaging the surface.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Engineered wood floors are also made from real wood. However, the core uses either plywood or hardwood with a layer of hardwood veneer at the top. This makes it more resistant to the effects of moisture and temperature, making it less likely to expand, contract, or buckle. This type of floor can be used in bathrooms, basements, or other spaces below ground level. Engineered hardwood is generally more durable to daily wear and can be placed directly over concrete unlike solid hardwood which generally requires a subfloor.
