Properly caring for your hardwood floors can keep those floors looking great for years to come!
Hardwood Floor Maintenance
Not only do hardwood floors add beauty and value to a home, they are very durable and relatively easy to maintain. With proper care and maintenance, you can extend the life of your hardwoods for many years to come.
How to Care for your Hardwood Floors
Hardwood care is quite simple. Clean your floors regularly to remove dirt from between the floor boards. This can be done by sweeping with a broom. Some vacuums have a special attachment that can be used to clean hardwoods. If there is an accidental spill on the floor, be sure to wipe it up immediately. Otherwise, a spill left on the floor can end up damaging the finish and the wood. It is also a good idea to place area rugs near entryways to keep small rocks and debris from being tracked onto the floors. However, make sure that the rugs do not have a rubber or vinyl backing.
Another important aspect of hardwood maintenance is knowing what kind of finish your floors have. Different finishes require different types of care. The three main types of finishes are:
- Surface Finishes
- Wax Finishes
- Acrylic Impregnated Finishes
Each of these types requires different cleaning products so make sure to check with your manufacturer, as well as your warranty, before using any flooring products.
Things to Avoid in Hardwood Maintenance
When caring for your hardwood floors, there are some things that you should always avoid. For example, don’t mop your floors with water. Wood should not get soaking wet and if it does, it is important to dry it immediately. And when you are mopping, never apply a wax to the floor that has a urethane finish. You also don’t want to expose the wood to things like plastics, oils or solvents. Plastic has a tendency to stick to wood and can leach its colors into the wood. And oils and alcohol that are found in products such as nail polish remover and perfume can dull and stain your hardwoods.
Hardwood floors are an attractive anchor to your home’s beauty. And with various knots, natural blemishes mineral streaks, no two pieces are alike. With regular sweeping and routine maintenance, hardwood care is easy to do and will keep your floors looking beautiful for a very long time.
